Software Update required
I’ve been receiving this message for some weeks now. And I’ve been ignoring it. It’s been popping up regularly on both my phone and iPad …… software update exists for this device. But I must be honest, I’ve been in resistance.

I don’t want to upgrade. Because it’s never straightforward. You know what I mean, don’t you? You click YES to ‘upgrade now’ and everything you have been familiar with, changes. It’s all very well fixing ‘bugs’, but when they start playing around with colours and fonts, re-ordering all of our apps or re-formatting things, it gets to be really annoying. And we wonder if we will ever get used to the changes.
But the truth is it doesn’t take long at all.
This week, as I clicked ‘Remind me later’ (again), it occurred to me that the operating system that is our Mind could also do with a regular update.
The Operating System in the mind, or the way we think, is constantly evolving. As we experience new things and become more informed, our thoughts change. If they don’t, our thoughts can become outdated or unhelpful. And when our thoughts become outdated or unhelpful, it’s important to take charge and to update them (like a software update).
There are many ways to update our thoughts:
Awareness
The first is to become AWARE of our thoughts. Pay attention to the thoughts that you have throughout the day. Are they positive or negative? Are they helpful or harmful? Once you are aware of your thoughts, you can start to challenge them. When you have a negative thought, ask yourself if it’s really true? Do you know for certain its true? Or is it a story that you are making up in your own head? Is there another way to look at the situation? Is there something you can do to change it?
Journaling
Journaling is a great way to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings. Write down your thoughts and feelings each day, and then take some time to reflect on them. Journaling can also help to calm your mind and improve your focus.
Focus on the Positive
Another way to update our thoughts is to focus on the positive. Make a conscious effort to focus on the positive aspects of your life. When you focus on the good, it will help to boost your mood and improve your outlook. You can also surround yourself with positive messages. Read books and articles that will inspire you and make you think, even encourage you to dream. Spend time with positive people who will lift you up and make you feel good about yourself. Limit time spent with those who drain your energy.

Practice Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can help to improve our thoughts. Take some time each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. This can be anything from your health to your family, to your home, or that 5-minute solo coffee break you had earlier in the day.
When you focus on the things you are grateful for, it will help to shift your perspective and make you feel more positive.
Updating your thoughts is an important part of living a happy and fulfilling life.
