It has now been 2 years almost to the day since I sold my home in Glasgow, put all of my personal belongings into storage and set off with just a suitcase, laptop and a quest for adventure.

 

Of course, I did not anticipate that 6 months later, the whole world would be in lockdown and I would be making the decision to settle temporarily in France.  But that’s what happened.

And there’s a lesson in the experience too isn’t there?  A reminder that we cannot control WHAT happens to us, but we can control HOW we respond in each and every moment.

 

 

I could have chosen to react angrily that my trip hadn’t quite gone to plan or that I didn’t have a home to return to but who would that serve?  How would that make me feel better?  Instead, I chose to embrace the situation and use the time – during the strictest part of lockdown, to revisit past adventures by sorting through all of the photos that were taking up space on my iPad.

 

 

But why the big changes in the first place?  Well for a while, I had held a vision of how I wanted my life to look and this was a key step in bringing my plan to life.

 

 

The vision – to sell my home in Scotland, downsize, cleanse – get rid of loads of ‘stuff’, relocate to a new town (possibly a new country), live mortgage free/debt free, and amend the structure of my Business so that I could live and work from anywhere in the world.

 

 

2 years later and here I am.  I sold my home, downsized – recently bought a new/smaller place and continue every day with the cleansing process. I’m mortgage free, debt free and living in a new town in Scotland with a Business structure that allows me to work from anywhere.

 

 

Of course, I haven’t been travelling overseas this year, but it remains a key element of my plan.  But for now, I have been enjoying some road trips and discovering the beautiful Scottish landscape.

 

 

You see, I very much believe that life happens by design not by default.   And if you want something, if you really want it, then you have to take action.  You have to MAKE it happen.

 

 

What do you want?

 

 

Do you have a vision for the life you want to live?
Do you ever even think about it?
If you don’t, I would suggest that NOW is a good time to start, otherwise you will get dragged along by the current, and end up living your life according to the needs of everyone around you.

 

 

What is the big decision that you have been putting off?
Are you procrastinating for fear of what others might say about your choices?  Perhaps there something you know you have to do, but have been resisting?  Maybe the uncertainty or fear of what happens after the decision is made is holding you back?  For example, if you intuitively know that it’s time to quit your job or leave a toxic relationship.  Sometimes the fear of the unknown – what happens beyond the initial decision, can prevent us from making it in the first place.

 

 

And sometimes when we think about our personal goals, the ‘scale’ of the task can seem quite overwhelming and so we never make a start.  Most especially if we don’t know exactly where the path will lead.

 

 

But know this, when you make a decision to change and COMMIT to that decision, the universe conspires to support you.

What would you like to be celebrating 12 months from now?  How would you like your life to look?   Importantly – how do you want to FEEL?

 

 

Now – set the intention to make it happen.

 

 

Next – map out the first 10 steps.
They don’t have to be detailed steps at this stage, just write a list of things that you need to do in order to bring your dream to life.

 

 

Then do something every day to move you towards your goal.

 

 

One phone call, one 15-minute language lesson, 15 minutes spent updating your CV, 15 minutes per day learning a new skill, or clearing out at home in preparation for the sale.    By the end of each month, you will have invested more than 7 hours in you and your goals.   In one year, close to 100 hours (at 15 mins per day).
